Bachman's Inc.

Landscape and Garden Center Intern

Minneapolis, MN - Internship

Landscape and Garden Center Intern
Family-owned since its founding in 1885, Bachman’s is based in Minneapolis and is currently led by fifth-generation family members. Bachman’s operates retail locations throughout the Twin Cities, including six full-service Floral, Gift & Garden Centers, a floral and gift store in the Galleria, and 28 floral departments within Lunds & Byerlys grocery stores. The company also operates indoor and outdoor landscaping divisions, a wedding and special events department, a wholesale nursery and hardscapes division, seven acres of greenhouses, and a 670-acre growing range in Farmington, MN, which produces many of the plants, flowers, and landscaping products sold at Bachman’s.

Bachman’s Landscape and Garden Center Intern will interact with customers seeking guidance for small Do-it-Yourself (DIY) projects. After a brief discovery, you will create a handwritten sketch that the customer can use as a shopping list and general planting guide. If the customer needs are greater, you will have the opportunity to work on the full-scale landscaping proposal with a partner landscape designer. The position will provide experience with retail service using plant knowledge and design skill. Additionally, you will discover the complete sales process on projects in Landscaping, from the beginning of a sale to the end of installation. You’ll work with experienced landscape designers, subcontractors, and install crews from Bachman’s. Your environment and daily tasks will continually vary, ranging from providing customer assistance and making recommendations in a retail setting to design drawing and making sales calls with landscape designers. This is a paid internship.

Job Duties:
  • Greet customers and through a brief discovery process learn about their small scale DIY project.
  • Using knowledge of best plant placement for light and area, along with the Bachman’s in-stock inventory, create a brief hand drawn sketch for the customer to use as a shopping list and planting guide.
  • Perform basic POS transactions. For example, sell gift cards that will be used as the form of payment for the sketch.
  • Explain the scope of the “Sketch” service offering to customers and make full scale landscape appointments for projects that exceed the “Sketch” model.
  • Measure new sites for base mapping. Hand drawing and CAD skills preferred.
  • Answer and return customer phone calls for designers.
  • Assist crews with installation by aiding in lay-out and installation of plant materials sold.
  • Assist with special community projects on behalf of Bachman’s Garden Services.
  • Assist with nursery warehousing in plant selections for Garden Service projects.
  • Design software applications and or paperless systems for the landscape industry.

Qualifications:
  • Sophomore students or higher, who have passed their gen horticulture classes.
  • Must have passed a minimum of entry level drafting classes passed.
  • Retail experience preferred

Schedule:
